Squaw Valley Songwriting Retreat 2018 Wed-Sun, Oct 3-7

4 days with nothing to do but write and share songs

If the location itself isn't enough to inspire you, we're pretty sure the atmosphere among us will encourage you to create good work and feel productive.

Who's it for? What skill level?

Anyone over 21 years old who can play basic chords solidly enough to perform at least a slow song.  If you have already written a few songs, great.  Experienced writers flourish here too. We work on creating music and lyrics, rather than developing technical skills and musicianship.

Do I have to be able to sing well?

Only well enough to get the melody across or teach it to a collaborator.

Work alone...or together

You can choose whether to collaborate or work by yourself, and to do different things on different days.

You make new personal connections...

...and leave the retreat with several brand new songs, as well as improvements to older pieces you might choose to work on.

Encouragement

You get constructive feedback and support from leaders and other participants.  We offer prompts, exercises, and suggestions to try on if you want to explore new styles or approaches.  Or you can just do your own thing.

Indoors or outside

Weather permitting (it's usually lovely in Squaw at this time of year) you'll have plenty of choice of places indoors or out where you can write.

Deck at the Main House

A great place to write or socialize

Communal meals

We eat breakfast and dinner together.  At lunchtime participants are free to wander into the village (which is only a short walk away) to grab something to eat.

Sharing regularly

At least once a day we take time to share new creations, works in progress, and enjoy each other's ideas.  (Often we join in too!) Before we leave we have an informal performance when everyone presents what they feel are their best songs.

Laughing together

Much encouraged! All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, we say...
